Good Dog

Co-Authored photographer Randal Ford's upcoming book, Good Dog. Published by Rizzoli New York and slated for worldwide distribution in Spring 2020. Wrote all narrative-based captions, as well as Artist Bio, Artist Statement, Book Introduction & Process Notes.

There is nothing standard about this poodle. CeeLo is one of the most interestingly decorated dogs I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. His pervasive grays and long, pointed beard likened him to a wise sage nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. No matter how many times we repositioned his pose, he continued to hold himself with a kind of meditative steadiness, as if inwardly chanting the age-old dog mantra,
“Booooone.”

Allie captivated the camera like a young Marilyn Monroe. Lovely and elusive, debonaire and delicate. Her silkened coat draped itself perfectly around her slender facial features, her eyes containing just the right amount of Hollywood glow. Much like Marilyn, Allie was clearly more than just a pretty face. She looked deliberately into my lens with such honesty, as if to echo the late star in saying, “Imperfection is beauty.”

And then there are dogs like Millie. Dogs that not only affirm our belief in their goodness, but also our belief in something greater.

Millie had a rough start to life. She was found walking the streets with a heavy chain around her neck, having forged her way out of the abandoned post to which it was attached. By the time she arrived at a shelter, her collar had embedded itself into her skin, while the tip of her tail had been anxiously chewed away. But, this story has a happy ending.

There are moments in life when a coincidence seems too great to be such. When the complexity and timing of many possibilities somehow come together to form one life-changing moment. When a dog finds a little girl, in the midst of her own trials, and teaches her how to hope again.

Although life can be painful, it can also be redemptive and full of love. We all walk around with our own chains, but Millie is living proof that the trick to getting rid of them is keeping yourself in the way of love and allowing others close enough to help you take them off.

A River runs through it…all of it. Whether it was a wide open field or a small, quiet studio space, River was running. This little scruff was not interested in slowing down for life. Having had a very close call with a case of puppy parvo and an even closer call after being hit by a car, River understood that no amount of time was to be wasted. He was full of wiry wonder and a relentless curiosity for whatever was next—in this case, it was a piece of hot dog dangling above his head.

but they used to be.

Rooted deep in the very heart of this collection, was an enduring desire to explore and learn from the emotional connection we share with our closest companions: Dogs.

As I sat face to face with over 120 different dogs, I couldn’t help but contemplate their origins. I couldn’t help but recognize the beautiful similarities they shared with one another, namely, their unwavering desire to be close to the humans that love them.

We know that dogs descended from wolves. The details around this decendency, however, vary widely. Scientists aren’t entirely sure when in time the split began, and there are still a sea of questions regarding where, but, what I find most interesting throughout all of their evolutionary studies is the overwhelming evidence for a process called self-domestication.

It is believed that perhaps humans are, in fact, not responsible for the domestication of wolves at all, but that, instead, wolves domesticated themselves. To be near to us.

It is said that if friends are the family you choose, then dogs are the family that choose you. And choose us, it seems they did. How beautiful to know that the very things we marvel at most in our pets—loyalty, love, steadfastness—are the very things that evolved to allow us to have them in the first place. That it may all come down to a single moment when the wild wolf decided to become
the Good Dog.

Thunderbird Real Food Bars: Chocolate Launch

The Thunderbird Chocolate Line was an exciting new launch for our audience. We wanted to spread the word that dessert can be good and good for you, without compromising healthy ingredients or flavor. I maintained the brand's playful spirit by incorporating, color, movement and cheeky, shareable copy into the campaign. The result was a visually interesting collection of social snippets that integrated on-brand keywords in a fun, digestible way. Pun intended.

Life is about balance, and, when the pendulum swings as far as COVID19, there is an equal pull in the opposite direction. It’s safe to say that on the other end of masked faces, sanitized hands and extreme precautions, there is a small space begging you to throw caution to the wind-- via that second pint of ice cream, that egg white froth atop your 2pm cocktail and that 3-course lobster dinner plated perfectly, for no one but yourself. Because you are a professional chef now, obviously.
